Leather Archives & Museum: Why It's a Must See

There's nothing sexier than the feel of real leather against your skin. Unless you're PETA. And even then--there's at least a quizzical fascination. As for BDSM, who doesn't get giddy at the idea of their partner lovingly pushing their sexual buttons? GetLusty for Couples is simply ecstatic to be based in Chicago, with its rich and interesting past in the leather community. So let's take a look at the museum dedicated to the legacy of leather.

* * *

Curious about kink? The Leather Archives and Museum, located in Rogers Park at 6418 N. Greenview Ave in Chicago, is more than just a room full of tanned hides. It is the continuing efforts by the leather lifestyle community to preserve and exhibit their history and culture for future generations. A virgin visitor might walk through the doors out of mild curiosity about the leather collection. LA&M offers an historical depth for the the visitor and removes it from the realm of the curious, planting it firmly in the realm of the scholarly.

The 10,000 sq ft (930 m2), two-story building houses:

  • Eight exhibition galleries;
  • A 1,425 sq ft (132.4 m2) climate controlled archival storage space;
  • A 164 seat auditorium;
  • A 600 sq ft (56 m2) reading library to house the research collections;
  • Various other spaces which serve as working space for staff, volunteers and researchers.
Collections

They have an extensive collection of historically-significant leathers, including a variety of hats and boots. There is also an ever-growing collection of patches from fetish clubs from around the world.

Despite the name, the collections at LA&M encompass much more than physical leather. The Teri Rose Memorial Library contains over 17,000 books and magazines. Additionally, there are extensive collections of fetish magazines, periodicals (one of their largest collections), as well as visual media such as photographs and film (some of which were previously unpublished, homemade documentaries of people’s lives or events). LA&M is also in the process of documenting the oral history of important people, places, and things in the Leather community.

Exhibits

The exhibit rooms showcase central aspects of alternative cultures as well as some of the important personages. You don't want to miss the stainless-steel, custom-made, male chastity device in The Dungeon Exhibit, or the vast collection of BDSM audio and video collection in The Leather Sins Screening Room.

The Leather Bar exhibit is, as one might imagine, devoted to leather bars, one of the early meeting places for the Leather community. Rather than a simple display, the room is modeled on an actual bar, and features Randy, a mannequin always ready to share a drink. It contains a plethora of memorabilia from famous bars.

There is also a room for the women: A Room of Her Own is an installation for the Women’s Leather History Project. Fakir Musafar (pictured to the left) receives considerable space. Several of his photographs are featured alongside memorabilia from his career.

The Etienne auditorium houses actual seats from the historic Paradise Theatre which opened in 1928, and was demolished in 1956. When one of the original Chicago leather bars closed down, the owners were forced to remove the original artwork from the walls. After finding its new home, Gold Coast owners re-painted their murals on panels, in case they had to move again. They moved locations 4 more times. Now the artwork is proudly displayed in the Etienne auditorium.

The museum accommodates to guest artists with a guest gallery (lovingly named G.A.G); a contemporary fetish gallery. Works by renowned and emerging artists are periodically displayed all year long. In addition to being used for LA&M’s film series, Pantheon of Leather Awards (now staged in Atlanta for 2012), and demonstrations, the 146 seat auditorium is available for a variety of events.

The Leather Archives and Museum is an extensive effort to preserve the cultures of Leather, Fetishism, Sadomasochism, and other alternative sexual practices. It's not just a museum, though, Lusties. The archives host a number of events, advocating for kink in our communities. Throughout the year they have jumble sales, auctions, art exhibitions, film festivals, and parties.

Simply put: the Leather Archives & Museum is a must visit!

The Leather Archives and Museum's hours: Thursday 11AM -7PM. Friday 11AM - 7pm. Saturday 11AM - 5PM. Sunday 11AM - 5PM. Don’t arrive too late; the last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

This Weekend! CineKink Chicago Film Festival

Are you interested in exploring a wide variety of sexuality through film? This weekend, CineKink will showcase sex-positive and kink-friendly films in a two night event. From documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot porn, the films recognize and encourage the positive depiction of sexuality and kink. GetLusty's Milan Weasley explores this exciting film festival in Chicago this weekend!

* * *

CineKink, founded in 2003, celebrates the exploration of sexuality and kink in film and television. CineKink holds an annual film festival in New York City,  celebrating sex positivity and kink in popular culture.

'The Kinky Film Festival' includes a short film competition, audience choice awards, presentations, parties and a gala kick-off fundraiser. This year they will hold the festival in the East Village, throughout Februrary, 2013.  The main theatre of events will be the Anthology Film Archives at 32 Second Avenue. Afterward, they hit the road and tour around the country, and soon it will make its way to Chicago!

Friday, November 16th, will be the first day. At Leather Archives & Museum, 6418 North Greenview, CineKink will screen the Best of CineKink 2012. With films named Petal to Pleasure, Smut Capital of America, What Makes Us Queer, and Tooshie Smooshie, the genres range from campy comedies to documentaries. The films start at 8pm, and afterward guests are invited to stay for snacks.

Saturday, the 17th, the festival returns to Leather Archives & Museum to show four more films opening with Sweet Prudence & the Erotic Adventure of Bigfoot at 2pm, and closing with Sirwiñakuy at 9pm.

After Sirwiñakuy, guests are invited to end the evening at The LRA - Chicagoland BDSM Dungeon and Leather Club. We haven't been able to double-verify that all are invited -- members and non-members, but we're assuming that this invitation is also extended to GetLusty for Couples readers, too!

For all you kinky filmmakers who might be interested in submitting short films for 2014, customary topics include, BDSM, leather and fetish, swinging, non-monogamy and polyamory, role-play and gender bending, sex work and sex geekery. As long as your film celebrates sex as a right of self-expression, CineKink will be happy to consider your submission. Call for entries can be found here.

In 2 Days! Ladies Night Out: Exploring Female Orgasm

Just 1 day left to register! After our chat with Cheryl Sloane of G Boutique, we got a call from Michelle Herzog, MSMFT about her upcoming event at G Boutique. We were already set to feature the event and now there's even more of a reason. Michelle Herzog explains more why she's leading an event on female orgasm and why you must attend! RSVP directly here.

Female Orgasm: It’s About the Journey, Not the Destination.

Female orgasm is something I have become very passionate about in the past few months. In preparation for a workshop I am giving in early November at G Boutique in Chicago, I began researching the female orgasm and all of its glory. What did I find? A Lot.

As a clinician, I see a variety of people who experience difficulty with intercourse and orgasm. In the U.S., we are taught a traditional model of intercourse, which frames sex as an activity and orgasm as the final goal. Think of this model as a game.

A game with a beginning, middle and end. Maybe a little bit of foreplay to start the game off right, throw in some intercourse when the players are ready, and by the end, everyone orgasms and calls it a night. Sound familiar?

It is my belief that how we feel and treat our sex lives should not be based on a standard (and very limited) way of thinking. Sex is fluid and different for everyone. Whether you orgasm or not, experiencing pleasure and connection with your partner or on your own can be a very powerful part of your sexual journey. I believe people can have fulfilling and amazing sex lives without the pressure of orgasm hanging over their heads. This is hard for people to hear because of how we are socialized to think about sex. Being open to new ways of thinking about and exploring sex are the first steps towards new levels of pleasure and excitement in the bedroom.

In my upcoming workshop, I will be inviting women to think outside the traditional box of what sex “should” look like. I will be educating about the different aspects of female orgasm, including the G-Spot and female ejaculation. Other topics include masturbation, mindful sex and orgasm-inducing techniques. Cheryl Sloane, the owner of G Boutique, will be demonstrating and educating about orgasm friendly products throughout the presentation. This is sure to be a fun and female friendly night out! More details can be found below.

Where: G Boutique 2131 N. Damen Ave. Chicago
When: Monday, November 5th at 7:15pm
Cost: $20.00
RSVP: Registration required. Please visit here to RSVP.

Podcast! Cheryl Sloane on Pleasing Your Partner & Owning Your Sexuality

G boutique opened in Chicago in 2002 as a lingerie and sex toy shop owned and operated by women, for women. Ten years later, it is one of the city's premier boutiques for selling top-notch products in an environment that is both comforting and empowering for women. At GetLusty, we're all about taking control of your own sexuality, so we caught up with owner Cheryl Sloane and recorded it for your listening pleasure. Here's what she had to say:

More on what we talked about:
  • Why the need for a shop like G Boutique? According to Cheryl, "To create an environment that promotes sexual education and a place where women can feel comfortable buying anything they needed for sex and romance."
  • Her advice to newer couples who are still getting to know each other? Take time to find out what pleases your significant other and learn about them — while orgasms are great, there is more to a healthy relationship than just climaxing!
  • Having difficulty achieving an orgasm with your partner? There may be lingering emotional, biological and physical factors involved, but relaxation and communication are key, Cheryl believes.
  • What are Cheryl's recommendations for couples looking to keep things fresh and exciting? If you have an interest in something, research it and get the information first before discussing it with your partner, so you can have an educated conversation and explore those secret fantasies together. (Hint, hint — Check out GetLusty!)
More about Cheryl:

Born and raised in Chicago, Cheryl Sloane lived and worked in Bucktown in Chicago for 15 years before opening g boutique. Here's how it happened: Cheryl and (former co-owner) Kari wanted to write erotic fiction.

After many brunches they got this crazy idea that Chicago wanted a boutique where women would feel comfortable buying everything they need for romance. Without a retail background, Cheryl called upon her theatre friends to help design a comfortable boutique where people would enjoy shopping. G boutique was always imagined as a place to build and support community. That was in 2002. Now, ten years later, she is thrilled to be helping people explore their intimate relationships in a safe, friendly environment. Connect with Cheryl and the g boutique staff on their website, on Facebook and Twitter @gboutique, or visit G Boutique, located at 2131 North Damen in Chicago, Illinois.

                                                                Consent Porn: Why It's Hot

                                                                We've covered how porn can be beautiful and why some object yesterday. We admit, we're pro-feminist porn and we have a bias. But how about consent porn? When you watch, make, or search for porn, consent might be the most important aspect of the experience.

                                                                Unfortunately, sex is portrayed in popular movies, TV shows, books without consent written in to the process. Although the viewer is generally meant to assume that all parties involved have consented beforehand, by leaving that vocalization of boundaries and desires out, viewers get the wrong idea about what healthy sex should look and feel like.

                                                                And although we understand porn isn't necessarily sex education, sometimes we do what we watch on porn because we thing its' real. Overall, this ambiguity can lead to potentially harmful or distressing sexual interactions and confusion about how a person should vocalize their dissatisfaction with their partner. Our new writer, Rachel Colias, is here to talk more about how a new Kickstarter called, "Consent porn" is really, really hot and you should support it!

                                                                * * *

                                                                Daniel Copulsky is a fellow Chicago consent advocate and has started his own sex-positive project. His Kickstarter project? It's called, "Consent Porn: Collected Erotica Featuring Consent". Its plans? Deliver exactly what it implies; hot, written erotica that includes the consent process. Part of this process, as outlined in Daniel’s Kickstarter description, includes characters in the erotica who, “talk about what they want, negotiate their limits, discuss safer sex, set boundaries with their partners, use safewords, and check in with each other.”

                                                                Daniel’s project is one GetLusty for Couples is especially excited about. We think consensual, amazing sex is really hot. However, some porn can be very vague--to actively crossing-boundaries. And that's not hot. We do appreciate others' interest in things like 'gang rape porn' but that's completely not our thing. (Although, before and after such porn filmings, they have chats with the stars to confirm their consent.)

                                                                By publishing and creating more consent-based pornography and erotica we chip away at the current rape culture we exist in; we stand firmly with those who understand and spread the necessity of clear consent within all types of sexual interactions and relationships.

                                                                Interested in integrating more vocalized, communicative consent into your own sex life? Fill in the blanks of this awesome consent form (to the left) with your partner.

                                                                Not only is this communication hot in itself, but it also encourages people in real-life situations to better communicate their own needs or discomfort. Daniel explains that his project will not be exclusive to any one type of erotica or sexual relationship.

                                                                If this is the kind of project you’d like to help ensure sees it all the way to publication and completion, there are a few ways you can help out. Daniel’s pledge goal is $5,000 and the deadline is Thursday November 1, 2012. This money will go towards website promotion, printing, paying authors, and the publication process. If you donate $25.00 or more you even get your own printed copy of the final book!

                                                                If you don’t want to donate money, but still wish to contribute Daniel and his project members are currently accepting erotica submissions. Have other ideas? They also still need people, especially with experience, to help them with “Publicizing the project, soliciting and reading submissions, proofreading, editing, designing the book and website, getting the anthology into stores, shipping orders, organizing readings, and thinking of other good stuff we ought to do.”

                                                                We love Daniel’s project and we definitely want to see its completion. If you'd like to contribute in any way or just learn more about the project, you can find his Kickstarter at this link.

                                                                Breast Cancer Awareness: 3 Tips for Prevention

                                                                It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. That means men and women have the responsibility to think about breast cancer. How can we prevent it? This is our bodies; our lives. Our health is our livelihood. Without great health, it's impossible to think, feel and be sexy. So this is a public service announcement. Think about it. Prevent breast cancer. GetLusty's Tia reports.

                                                                * * *

                                                                It’s October. For most people, red leaves, cute new sweaters, and Halloween come to mind. For some of us, our boobies become a priority. After all, it is Breast Cancer Awareness month. On average, one out of every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Although breast cancer is the second leading cause of death amongst women, death rates have been declining since 1990. However, breast cancer will continue to exist as a burden on both men and women’s lives across the world. So in honor of those who have experienced breast cancer themselves or in their families, we’re going to talk about preventative care.

                                                                Below are three preventive tips in the fight against breast cancer:

                                                                #1 Know your medical history.

                                                                Ask your mom and dad if they know of anyone in their family that had a type of cancer and specifically, breast cancer. Because there is no exact reference in diagnosing the cause of this particular type of disease, genetics, family history, and personal changes in the body all need to be examined.

                                                                #2 Know your tits.

                                                                If you’re experiencing liquid coming out of your nipples and you’re not nursing or pregnant, contact your doctor. If your breasts get a little more lumpy or sore during your period, that could be normal.

                                                                During your period, your breasts could appear to feel more sensitive or even look bigger. All of these are normal, but they may not be normal for you depending on your age and time of month. My best advice is to always have a yearly breast examination after the age of 20. After the age of 35, depending on your medical history, your doctor may request you come every 6-8 months. Either way, listen to your healthcare provider. Their job is to help your body stay healthy.

                                                                #3 Touch yourself. Down there and up top!

                                                                There are a couple of ways to do a breast self-exam. One way includes lifting your right arm and using your left hand as the examination tool. Use three fingers and start from the armpit. With or without hair, you should be able to feel any lumps by moving your fingers in a circular motion.

                                                                Don’t be alarmed if you feel texture underneath the skin—that’s normal. However, if you feel a pea-sized lump, I’d go ahead to the other side and see if the other side has it too. No body is the same and sometimes, the body produces fat cells and our lymph nodes can become swollen. Now, take those three fingers and that circular motion and go across the breast. Then, switch hands and do the other one. Because changes occur at different times of the month, practice doing it while you are on your period and while you aren’t and see if there are any changes. Simply being aware of your own body could save your life.

                                                                I know this article probably didn't make your nipples hard. I get it. It’s a touchy subject (literally). However, it’s important to not only know this stuff, but to practice it. Not only for women, but for the one percent of men who get breast cancer too. For the curious men out there reading this: get to know your woman’s breasts. In many cases, you’ll be the only one giving them the attention they deserve. For the woman, with her hand up her shirt reading this: the next time you see your mister, go ahead and slowly rub his chest. You might have to explain why, but trust me, it’s worth the explanation.

                                                                Call her Tia. She's a recent graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During her college career, she was part of a volunteer group called the Sexual Health Peers where she bonded with like-minded, sex-positive people from various backgrounds and orientations. She has taught workshops on STDs, birth control, safe sex, and relationships. It was one of the highlights of her college career and allowed her to get involved in Planned Parenthood of Illinois in Action. She was a Campaign Organizer who stood for the reproductive rights of women in Illinois.

                                                                As a third-wave feminist, she currently works in the makeup industry promoting what she believes in: women should feel and be as beautiful as they want to without scrutiny. She believes in teaching factual and healthy outlooks on sex and relationships as a way to create a sex-positive culture where future generations can thrive.

                                                                A Sexy Pillow? Furniture for Pleasure? Yes, Please!

                                                                As we enter week two of Orgasm October, I'd like to turn our attention to furniture. And not just any couch, bed, or chair. This is furniture specifically made to enhance your love life. In most porn, they make it look easy. Just bend over the couch, stretch out over the bed, put your leg here, butt here. Pretty soon, you're in an X-rated game of Twister. And while that could be some awesome foreplay, mid-coitus, when her arms are tired or his legs fall asleep, a little support could be the perfect push into orgasm-land. Ellen Dukes is back with some fun sex furniture suggestions to make your sex life even more fantastic!

                                                                * * *

                                                                This week's sex toy focus is on the sex cushion. Think of a plushy wedge or ramp you can angle for nearly every position; marrying comfort with sex. Seriously, what could be better?

                                                                I would suggest Pinkcherry's Fetish Fantasy Inflatable Position Master. Not only is it light and portable (hence inflatable), the Position Master has a gently sloping angle perfect for elevating hips to that perfect position, plus handles on the side for grasping during those intense moments. And the price is right, so for first timers just testing the waters, trying this toy won't break your bank.

                                                                The ramp shape tends to be the more popular shape for sex furniture. If you haven't already experimented with adding pillows beneath his or her hips for a new experience, the ramp is absolutely perfect for easing into these new positions. While pillows work in a pinch, wedges likes the Position Master, give far more support to make each thrust count.

                                                                Think about those staple positions you use most. Missionary, while tried and true, becomes a bull's eye for a lady's g-spot. Her elevated hips angle his penis right towards the upper wall of the vagina. Once you try that golden move out, try placing the wedge on the edge of the bed, with him standing. For those with beds not quite high enough, now you have some wiggle room!

                                                                Or, how about the delightful doggie style? With her bent over, sometimes arms, legs and even your back can get tired. Or, for those partner's with shorts legs, the angle just doesn't work well. With the wedge supporting her, she gets lifted those couple extra inches! The cushion will make the move from behind a nightly go-to.

                                                                What about the cowgirls out there? Place the wedge under his upper back to bring both partners closer while she rides. Or, place the highest part under his hips for a wild romp. Seriously, the combinations are endless, especially including other favorite toys like, restraints or vibrators.

                                                                In fact, for those seasoned in the ways of sex furniture or those looking for more, here's a treat for you. Pinkcherry's Inflatable Love Lounger. All the ease of the inflatable wedge, plus many more sexy benefits. Perhaps a well timed anniversary gift for that adventurous couple? Even a kinky Christmas gift for your significant other?

                                                                Just remember, it's all about that slight change that can make an enormous difference in your sex life. Be open, be safe, be sexy and give yourself some wild orgasms this month. You deserve it!

                                                                This is a guest post by GetLusty writer, Ellen Dukes. Though Ellen Dukes is not an ethical slut (a damn respectable title, she'll have you know), her curiosity, openness, and the indefatigable search engine Google have lead her to a 21st century sex education.

                                                                A Chicagoan, you may see Ellen enjoying the delights of her deeply loving relationship with her boyfriend. Have a naughty story? She's heard naughtier, but tell her all the same at ellen@getlusty.com. She's a wannabe sexpert with years of porn viewing, listening to sex stories, and textbook browsing just waiting to put this knowledge to wonderful use.

                                                                Besides continuing our awesome content, we have a lot of readers asking, "what's next?". I must dish. I've told you about what's next, thanking readers for being involved. I've been involved for the past several weeks in our plan for mid-November. A new website. A new set of features. 3 Reasons to Try Roller Derby For Better Sex

                                                                Last week, a reader came to us and asked if we could write about women in the roller derby. He mentioned that his wife had joined. He raved about how it had changed her (emotional and sexual life) for the better. We thought this one would be a bit challenging to write an article about, but we gladly took it on!

                                                                Well, after we saw a group of roller derby participants at SlutWalk Chicago, we knew what he was talking about. Turns out roller derby is bad ass and has a lot of pros--for your emotional and sexual health! Our Crimson Love reports.

                                                                * * *

                                                                Roller derby is the sport of bad ass women on roller skates pushing, shoving, and scoring. What's not to love? But who knew roller derby could work wonders for your confidence, emotional health, sex and over all well being?

                                                                Yes, it's true. Let me explain.

                                                                #1 Tone your body

                                                                Roller derby is great for your health! In spite of all of the bumps and bruises, roller derby is a great cardio workout. Why? It's great for your legs, and rear end. If buns, thighs and cardio don't do it for you, pushing other girls around will likely still be a fun work out.

                                                                #2 Stay mentally sharp

                                                                Mentally, this tough sport will also help you stay sharp. It takes real skill to keep yourself up in skates, while also watching out for other team mates. You'll have to be good to keep yourself going. If you're the best, maybe you can even win a few trophies. And who hates trophies?

                                                                Also, take the issue of stress. Stress can keep you from being mentally sharp. If you have a lot of stress, roller derby will certainly help work out tension. Get aggressive! Be forceful! Learn where your dominance comes from. Maybe you can also take that back to your bedroom? Be a force to be reckoned with on wheels while you push and rough up other ladies on the floor.

                                                                #3 Boost confidence

                                                                Lastly, roller derby is great for your confidence. While your body is getting into shape and getting stronger, and you're working out some anger and stress you are becoming a better version of yourself.

                                                                You will become more comfortable, confident, and you will feel sexier. When you feel confident and sexy, it shows in the bedroom (that makes it helpful for both you and your man!)

                                                                If you know how to roller skate, don't mind some bumps and bruises and want to work it out in all the best ways, join a roller derby club near you. There are roller derbies in almost every major city. Chicago has The Windy City Rollers! Follow them on Twitter @windycityroller.

                                                                This is a guest post by our very own Crimson Love. Crimson is our resident BDSM fetish expert.
